DEFECTS IN DESIGN AND MANUFACTURING - OVERHEATING

Proper Pressure in Your Engine Coolant Moves Heat Away

A car’s internal combustion engine generates heat, and modern cars use a circulating liquid (coolant) to transfer heat away from the engine block to a high surface area radiator coupled with a fan.  Pressure is required to move the coolant, although significant pressure can build up and thus an expansion tank is typically used to allow overflowing coolant to be captured and reused. The expansion tank allows proper pressure and flow of the coolant, creating a properly cycling system.

When hoses, hose clamps, pumps, or even the expansion tank itself fails in integrity, low pressure of coolant results and the diminished liquid flow can reduce the amount of heat removed from the engine. Engine overheating is the end result.

If a car engine cooling system is not properly working, the overheating can can damage the heat gaskets and even deform engine parts, leading to leaks and possibly a seized motor. These types of repairs can be very costly.

DESIGN OR MANUFACTURING FLAWS

Some car models have design defects in the cooling system that lead to engine failure. Car manufactures may recognize these issues and recall the vehicles to fix the problem or issue a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) instructing special repair or monitoring of the vehicle. Usually, when engine problems occur within the warranty period of the vehicle, repair costs are not the responsibility of the owner or person leasing. When design or manufacturing defects are the root cause of engine issue, car dealers and manufactures typically repair the vehicle and do not charge owners and leasees, even if out of the warranty period. This is the fair and right thing to do. However, some car dealers and manufactures may not inform you of the known issues, and require you to pay for repairs to the damaged engine.
